Virtual Tape Library- Promising Advancement in Information Technology
Dear Readers! Days have arrived where you can pack even the most indispensable information in a tiny chip. The entire world has gone digital and there is nothing to feel excited on the rapid growth witnessed in the arena of information technology. But whenever it comes to disk-based backup of data, it is mandatory that we witness high cost. This has always remained a big barrier in the way of a disk back-up. Days have arrived where loads of vendors now offer virtual tape library vtl systems that make use of SATA disks that are lot faster than the tape counterpart. I love to confess history is always sweet because of its pros and cons. When virtual tape was initially introduced to the Information Technology industry, loads of storage managers dismissed it as a niche product not healthy enough for enterprise class backups. But as of now, this is the only technology that has proving itself in production environments. A Virtual Tape Library of VTL as we call it, fundamentally mimic a tape backup library but employs disks as the means. It is an archival storage mechanism that makes it feasible to hoard data as if it were being stored on tape even if it is essentially stored on disk or on a different storage medium.
