  • Engineering A Better World
  • Science General Maths General Design & Technology Engineering & Manufacturing Careers General   14-16 Age Range

    What is the project?

Engineering a better world is a pilot project, running for three years from 1st June 2004, designed to deliver a public awareness campaign to encourage young people into engineering. It is the first initiative of its kind in the UK and embraces the Yorkshire and Humberside region. An important central element of the project is the role of joined up initiatives to provide students and teachers with a coordinated programme of schemes of work, of direct relevance to the National Curriculum, at each stage of a students educational career.  Visit the project website here extra.shu.ac.uk/eabw

  • A Bridge Too Many: Logistics and Planning Challenge
  • Science General Maths General Design & Technology Engineering & Manufacturing   11-14 Age Range 14-16 Age Range 16-19 Age Range
This inspirational, problem solving challenge requires a team of ‘engineers’ to deconstruct a bridge over a railway line without closing down the line. The challenge develops planning and decision-making skills and uses mathematics to calculate loads and forces operating in structures.

  • Construction Simulation
  • Science General Maths General Design & Technology Engineering & Manufacturing   11-14 Age Range 14-16 Age Range 16-19 Age Range
The Construction simulation places young people in competing teams (15 per team) working in role within the construction industry. The simulation requires the teams to build two houses (in model form) to a budget and a timescale following the procedures of the industry and exploring new technologies that are revolutionising the construction sector.
